Domestic violence is any form of physical, verbal, sexual, psychological or financial abuse that occurs amongst family members.  Once an instance of abuse occurs, it is very likely that is will occur again, as most instances of domestic abuse are cyclical.  For this reason, people who are victims of domestic abuse should always take legal action immediately.

What is a restraining order?

A restraining order is a court issued order that prevents the person listed on the order from contacting or bothering the person who obtained the order.  In family law cases, restraining orders prohibit people from molesting, annoying, harassing or communicating with their spouse, their children.  In some cases, a restraining order may prevent the person listed on the order from having custody of their children.

What is an order of protection?

What should I do if I am being abused?

If you are being abused, you need to seek help immediately.  The very best thing you can do is to report the abuse to law enforcement.  Police can intervene at any time and prevent the abuse from escalating.  The next thing you should do is to work with an experienced domestic violence attorney who can help you get a restraining order or an order of protection.
